Vines

Veenow is a 40 acre vineyard in Shropshire. The first field of vines were planted in 2021, 4000 Bacchus and 8000 Pinot Noir. This combination allow the family to make still and sparkling wine.

Early 2023 another 28 acres of vines were planted, choosing to expand the Bacchus and Pinot Noir varieties, while adding Meunier, Cabernet Noir and Chardonnay. These further varieties allow more flexibility with wine making, whilst Cabernet Noir will add body and flavour to the red wine and there are plans for a superior white wine from the Chardonnay variety in 2025.

The vines are planted East to West on glorious, sunny slopes in the village of Waters Upton on the Farm. Metal trellising guides and supports the vines as Vertical Shoot Positioning and double guyot pruning is the chosen vine training.

The soil structure shines through in our wines.

TERROIR

Veenow vineyard is nestled in the village of Waters Upton, surrounded by countryside. The 40 acres of vineyard are planted on the 162 acre farm with soils composed of clay, sandstone and sandy loam. The soils are comprised of many stones radiating the warmth back to the vines, whilst acting as natural drainage. The minerality of our terroir really shines through in the range of Veenow wines.

Land, AIR and Water

It is important at Veenow vineyard to look after the land, air and water around us as these are key to great quality grapes that produce the wine.

Land – We look after our land and terroir as the fundamental building blocks to beautiful wine. Healthy terroir will bring out the best in wine and we are continually sympathetic in our practices within the vineyard to ensure it is not compromised. The sandstone running through most of our vineyard is expressed by the clean finish and minerality within our wine.

Air – By looking after a range of cover crops and being a patron to grand oak trees on the farm it not only provides a habitat for wildlife but also carbon sequences the air around us. The air also brings about gentle breezes and airflow through the vineyard to reduce mildews and diseases and improves our grape quality naturally.

Water – A key asset to our vineyard is water and we look after it that way. Every field has grass / legume margins to prevent nutrient run off while the water within the river tern brings about the natural benefit of moving low lying frosts in the spring and providing cool downward breeze to maintain airflow.

Future Plans

Robert and Katie have many future plans for the vineyard and the wine they produce. The upcoming wines will expand the wine menu to four wines with the plans for a sparkling in the future and some more alternatives.

The vineyard also has the potential to grow in years to come with two more fields on the farm available for plating, watch this space!
